Weight Lifting – Lift Like a Girl!

One of the biggest weight lifting myths I’ve heard is that lifting weights makes women manly. It takes an incredibly strict and specific dedicated approach to training and diet for a female to look that way (even then some “assistance” can be required).  The greatest misconception of fitness is that it is one dimensional, while there is no denying a world record holder marathon runner has incredible endurance, s/he would most likely struggle to keep up with a swimmer or track & field athlete who is top in his/her sport. This is the whole premise behind CrossFit, to be adequate in all the domains of fitness. Strength and power are just two of them. As a female I truly believe women shouldn’t overlook the benefits of lifting weights!

Not only are there physical benefits, you stand to gain emotionally too.

The positive effect lifting weights has had on my confidence is invaluable and I know so many other females who have said the same. I think this is because it allows you to see the incredible things your body is capable of. The sense of empowerment that comes from being pushed out of your comfort zone and surviving is incredible.

The following are just some of the physical benefits:

More muscle (not the same thing as bulk) results in a higher metabolism, which can mean you burn more fat. Not only does your daily metabolic rate (the amount of energy your body requires each day to keep you alive) increase but also your post-workout energy burn also goes up as a result of recovery.

Building strength will also carry over into your everyday activity. For example moving furniture becomes easier and the risk of injury while doing so becomes less. Having stronger muscles means your joints are more stable. Your bone density and strength will also benefit as it adapts to cope with extra load.

If you’ve never lifted weights before, give it a go, you never know you might really enjoy it!
